Afterschool Literacy and Reading Tutoring
Vision Statement

At Chase Literacy Learning and Teaching Center, our vision is to transform the educational landscape and improve life choices for Black children on the South Side of Chicago by providing children with targeted, engaging, afterschool literacy activities AND empowering educators with the highest quality, research-based professional development and coaching in all areas of literacy. We aspire to be a beacon of excellence in literacy education and achievement where every teacher is equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver effective reading instruction, and every Black child has the opportunity to achieve their highest academic potential through a solid foundation in reading.

Afterschool Literacy (K-3)
Kids Drawing
  • Daily read-aloud sessions with ageappropriate and diverse books followed by discussion and a focus on comprehension strategies.

  • Activities such as writing prompts, graphic organizers, to help students plan their writing along with mentor texts that encourage creative writing, journaling, and story creation.

  • Reading games such Scrabble, Bogle, and Word Bingo Daily word work, hands-on activities like word sorts, building words with letter tiles, and creating word families.

  • Storytelling and drama encouraging students to retell stories or create their own through drama and puppetry.

  • Technology Integration including educational apps and software that focus on reading and writing skills, interactive e-books and literacy games.

Reading Tutoring (1st-8th)
  • Regular assessment and progress monitoring to determine reading skill focus and track progress.

  • Individualized learning plans based on assessment data.

  • Customized reports compiled into a detailed report that provides insights into the child’s academic performance.

  • Collaboration with classroom teachers to align after-school activities with school curriculum.

  • Engaging, interactive teaching methods tailored to the student’s learning style. Sessions typically include a mix of direct instruction, guided practice, and independent work.

  • Ongoing monitoring and communication with parents. Adjustments to the learning plan are made as needed.
